Prostate cancer has been found to be associated with increased saturated fat in diet, according to a new study. Saturated fat is commonly found in cheese and fatty beef. High consumption of such foods is linked to a higher risk of aggressive prostate cancer.
Research assistant professor Emma H. Allott said, “We show that high dietary saturated fat content is associated with increased prostate cancer aggressiveness. This may suggest that limiting dietary saturated fat content, which we know is important for overall health and cardiovascular disease prevention, may also have a role in prostate cancer.”

Results were derived from a survey based on 1,854 men diagnosed with prostate cancer. The men were asked a series of questions about their diets along with other factors at the time of their prostate cancer diagnosis. The researchers then explored the association between saturated fat consumption and prostate cancer risk.
The researchers found that aggressive prostate cancer risk was associated with a higher consumption of saturated fat. Saturated fat in the blood raises cholesterol levels. Men taking statins for their cholesterol were also found to have a weaker association between saturated fat consumption and prostate cancer aggressiveness. The results reveal that statins may counteract the effects of saturated fat, but cannot reverse them.
Lastly, consumption of polyunsaturated fat, the kind found in nuts and fish, was associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer aggressiveness.
