Probi AB, a probiotic ingredient manufacturer, just released study findings that suggest certain strains of probiotics may benefit bone health by slowing down bone loss among postmenopausal women. Postmenopausal women have the highest occurrence of bone loss and osteoporosis, which can lead to many complications.
The probiotic used for the study contained three patented strains of probiotics used in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. It involved 249 women who received a daily dose of either a probiotic containing the particular strains or a placebo. Bone mineral density was recorded using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry.
By the end of the study, the researchers found a significant decrease in bone loss among the women taking the probiotic compared to those taking the placebo.
CEO of Probi, Ole Søgaard Andersen, explained, “We are very excited about the results showing an opportunity to delay the progression of bone loss by using our probiotics in this healthy population, which potentially may lead to a reduced risk for osteoporosis.”
Linda Neckmar, head of marketing and sales for Probi, added, “Prior to the clinical study, the strains [had] been tested in a mouse model of bone loss, and the results from the clinical study confirm the earlier findings.”
Osteoporosis is a serious bone disease that increases the risk of fractures and breaks and can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life along with a countries healthcare system. Therefore, finding effective ways in reducing bone loss can improve the individual’s life and lessen the burden on the healthcare system.
It is well known that probiotics can help support a healthy digestive system, but this study reveals that the benefits of probiotics can span much further than just the gut.
