Ear infections – known as otitis – are common among younger children but can be experienced at any age.
Essential oils are concentrated liquids derived from plants. They can be inhaled or applied topically when diluted but should never be ingested. Some essential oils have been found to have antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, which makes them effective at healing infections.
It has been noted that essential oils may help improve ear infection symptoms such as swelling and pain, but there is little scientific evidence to suggest that essential oils can treat an ear infection.
However, a 2014 study found that combining clove, lavender, and herb-Robert oil was as effective as prescription ear drops. This combination is known as Lamigex and it helps relieve tenderness, itchiness, and discharge.
Tea tree oil is another effective essential oil as it contains terpinene-4-ol – an antibacterial substance. A 2006 review found tea tree oil to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Additional research is required to determine if it is an effective treatment for bacterial ear infections.
A 2011 study on oregano oil found it contains carvacrol, which has antiviral properties, making it possibly effective at treating ear infections.
Meanwhile, a 2005 study looked at rats with ear infections who were treated with basil oil. The findings suggested that basil oil led to significant improvements in both types of ear infections compared to the placebo.
Other notable oils which people have used for ear infection relief include garlic, peppermint, mustard, and thyme oil.
It’s important to note that before using a natural remedy like essential oils to treat your ear infection, consult a doctor to determine if it’s safe.
