The prostate gland is about the size of a walnut. Its primary responsibility is to keep the male reproduction system on track. Here are some specific roles which the prostate gland holds.
Prostate fluid protection: The prostate adds an alkaline mixture of calcium, enzymes, and other components which makes up 30 percent of seminal fluid. This fluid helps neutralize the acidic vaginal environment which can destroy sperm.
Expelling semen out of the body: Muscles in the prostate gland helps to expel sperm through the urethra and push it out through ejaculation. The help of the prostate gland helps ensure the sperm has a good chance of traveling through the vagina to reach the fallopian tubes.
Producing prostate-specific antigen (PSA): PSA helps semen become fluid and carry out sperm. PSA levels are also measured when screening for prostate cancer. High levels may indicate a problem.
Maintaining erection: Nerves in the prostate gland help men maintain erections as they help send signals for extra blood flow to go to the penis, which ensures a steady erection.
Filtering sperm: The prostate gland helps remove any potentially toxic substances, which could damage or harm sperm.
Urine flow control: The prostate gland plays a role in controlling urine flow and preventing leaks from occurring. This is why when a man has an enlarged prostate, they experience leaks and weaker stream.
Protects against urinary tract infections: Secretions from the prostate help prevent urinary tract infections. Women lack this and have higher rates of urinary tract infections – along with differences in women’s parts versus men’s parts.
Intensifying men’s orgasms: The prostate gland is often referred to as the male g-spot. When stimulated it can lead to more intense orgasms.
