Traditional Heart Attack Prevention Recommendations
Doctors recommend a number of heart attack prevention options:
- Eating less saturated fat
- Getting more exercise
- Spending less time sitting down
- Eating more fiber-rich foods
The list goes on and on, and each year there are new drugs being produced to reduce the risk of coronary heart problems. However, new research may provide a simpler and safer method.
Could Water Be The Key to Heart Attack Prevention?
A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology over 10 years ago stated that increasing water intake was the best method of heart attack prevention. But this study didn’t receive very much attention, and has largely been forgotten – until now. A recent study looked into how much water was needed to help reduce heart attacks, following over 20,000 adult men and women between the ages of 38 and 100 participating for six years.
Those that consumed more than five glasses of water per day had a much lower chance of heart attack than those that consumed fewer than two glasses per day. Men that consumed five or more glasses a day had a 54 percent lower chance of suffering a fatal heart attack, while women consuming that amount reduced their heart attack risk by 41 percent.
The beauty of the study was that none of the other daily habits of the participants were changed. Those participating in the study still ate the same amount of food, consumed the same amount of alcohol, did the same amount of exercise, and even continued smoking the same number of cigarettes per day. The only change to their lifestyle was their water consumption, and that small change alone greatly reduced their risk of coronary heart disease.
Could reducing your risk of heart attack really be so simple? Drinking a few liters of water per day may be enough to prevent yourself from suffering a life threatening heart attack. Each 8-ounce glass of water is half a liter/quart, so drinking between 3 and 4 liters/quarts of water per day could cut your risk of heart attack in half.
Staying hydrated will not only decrease heart attack risk, but it can also help ward off other illnesses, aide in weight loss, and improve your overall health.
