Study: Fasting helps regeneration of damaged, old immune cells
Published in Cell Stem Cell, researchers explored the benefits of prolonged fasting on immune cells. What they uncovered was prolonged fasting not only protects immune cells from damage, but it also leads to regeneration.
The study was conducted on mice and humans who received chemotherapy. Fasting lowered the count of white blood cells. Fasting cycles in mice showed cells that are commonly responsible for blood and the immune system began regenerating.
Prolonged fasting in the study meant not eating for two to four days over a six month period. Researchers saw old cells die and the formation of new ones. They said more new cells can lead to healthier aging as the immune system typically weakens with age.
