In fact, the only constants might be that regardless of the reason, it hurts and severely limits mobility and quality of life.

Sometimes an old injury can flare-up. Other times, it’s arthritis. Sometimes it can be a poor choice of footwear.

Whatever is causing your knee pain, there are possible ways to fight back and regain control of your life. Here are some of the dos and don’ts of knee pain.

Don’t Rest Too Much: If your pain is not the result of an acute injury, you won’t want to spend too much time resting. Sitting and rest can weaken muscles in the joint, which can ultimately lead to worse long-term pain.

Walk: Walking can help strengthen muscles that support the knee joint and increase flexibility. This can help relieve pain and lower the risk of injury.

Limit Fall Risk at Home: You are at greater risk of falling if you have a painful or unstable knee. Make sure pathways are clear at home, clutter is removed from the floor, and you use an aid, like a cane, if required.

Wear Appropriate Footwear: Sometimes, knee pain starts in the foot or ankles. Wearing the right type of footwear can make a significant difference in joint pain and injury risk. Elect shoes that fit well, have good support, and avoid spending too much time in sandals or heels.

Practice “RICE”: If you have a minor injury or arthritis flare, use the RICE method. RICE stands for: rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Taking a little time to recuperate can help you get back on your feet.

Get Professional Help: If the pain doesn’t go away or gets worse, talk to a doctor about further treatment options and methods.

Knee pain does not have to control your life. A variety of treatment options exist to keep you up and moving, so use them to your advantage.
