This Common Therapy Won’t Hurt Your Heart

testosterone therapy cardiovascular riskMen suffering from low testosterone may be advised to undergo testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). However, there has been a long-held belief that testosterone replacement therapy may increase cardiovascular risk.

The latest research findings suggest TRT does not increase cardiovascular risk and is generally safe to undergo.

The recent study comes from Italy, where researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 31 randomized controlled trials published between 2010 and 2018. Of the data, 2,675 men underwent TRT, and 2,308 received a placebo.

TRT was not associated with a significant increase in cardiovascular risk compared to the control group. It also wasn’t associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events such as arrhythmias and aortocoronary bypass surgery or cardiovascular events overall.

Researcher Giovanni Corona explained, “It is possible that the improvement of body composition and glycometabolic profile, related to TTh [testosterone therapy], might explain, at least partially, the protective role of TTh and CV risk documented in this analysis.”

The average length of trial was three years or less, so researchers are unaware if longer use of TRT could result in other adverse effects. If you are undergoing testosterone replacement therapy, ensure you are under the watchful eye of your doctor.

To further reduce your risk of a cardiovascular event, ensure you are adhering to a heart-healthy lifestyle of healthy eating, regular exercise, not smoking, sleeping well, and reducing stress.
