prediabetes and arthritisResearch findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest that one in three people with prediabetes also has arthritis. Furthermore, half of those living with prediabetes and arthritis are also obese and/or inactive.

The study looked at data from 2009 and 2016 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. The researchers examined the prevalence of arthritis among Americans with prediabetes, a precursor for type 2 diabetes. The researchers looked at the correlation of prediabetes and arthritis with obesity and lack of physical activity.

The authors wrote, “Health care and public health professionals can address arthritis-specific barriers to being physically active among adults with prediabetes by promoting evidence-based arthritis interventions. Furthermore, increased dissemination of the National Diabetes Prevention Program can potentially reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes among adults with arthritis and assist them with managing their pain from arthritis.”

Prediabetes is a preventable condition by adjusting one’s lifestyle habits. Eating well, regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight are key factors in reducing one’s risk of prediabetes.

These factors are also important in maintaining healthy joints as regular exercise can help minimize inflammation, which triggers joint pain. Additionally, certain foods can promote or deter inflammation, therefore, eating healthy is essential as well.
